Iceland Inspiration

Yoko Ono is inspired by Iceland!  Ms. Ono, deeply influenced and impressed by the natural beauty of Iceland and its eco-friendly use of geothermal energy, chose this Nordic country as the site for her amazing memorial. In 2007, the Imagine Peace Tower on Viðey Island in Kollafjörður Bay near Reykjavík  was  unveiled and dedicated to her late husband, the legendary John Lennon.

The tower itself is actually a network of fifteen searchlights which are projected into the sky from a large stone monument base (powered with Iceland’s geo-thermal energy grid using only 75kW!).  The base is round, forms a “wishing well” and buried underneath are over half a million written wishes collected throughout the years by Ono.   The words “Imagine Peace” are carved into the monument in 24 languages.

The tower is to be lit every year from October 9, Lennon’s birthday, through December 8, the day he lost his life.

Travel to Iceland this fall to see it for yourself.  You can watch Ms. Ono’s declaration of love for Iceland here.
