Fun at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport

By 1800FlyEurope in Destination Highlights | on January 25th, 2011

Why be bored while waiting to board your flight?  Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport guarantees that you won’t be.  Here are just a few good reasons you should use the Schiphol Airport, other than for a cheap flight to Amsterdam.

Good Reads Forgot to bring something to read during your layover, but don’t feel like spending the cash for a new book?  No worries, just visit the Airport Library!  Travelers are given access to a plethora of music, movies and books.  The library is meant for use only while in the airport, meaning visitors cannot check out items for later return, but it is a welcome change from the same ol’ bookstores and newspaper stands.  An added bonus: the library offers educational movies on Dutch culture for free download to your mobile device.

Good Odds If you’re looking for a little fun and excitement, head on down to the Holland Casino, located right in the airport!  The casino offers Blackjack, Slot Machines, Roulette and more!  Please note: you must be at least 18 years old and have your boarding pass and valid identification to enter the casino.

Good Feelings A great way to begin or end your trip to Amsterdam is to book a “Back to Life” massage or take a seat in the Massage-O-Matic chair. The “Back to Life” is an oil-free massage, performed by a masseuse; clients sit in a chair while they have their legs, neck, back, arms and head are treated.  The latter is a chair in which you insert money to receive a shiatsu style massage.

Good Culture One of the most popular features of the airport is the Rijksmuseum.  Open daily, this famous art museum showcases works by the Dutch Golden Age Masters (on permanent exhibition), as well as temporary exhibitions three times per year.

This is just a small number of activities available to travelers; there is much more to do at the Schiphol Airport than just what I’ve listed.  What is the best airport you’ve used?

Sensational Souvenirs

By 1800FlyEurope in Destination Highlights | on January 21st, 2011

When traveling, I always take an extra bag for the keepsakes I plan to bring home. Whether they’re for me or my friends/family, I need plenty of room!

Some people request ridiculous mementos, things that can be used as a desk bauble, others want edible items and the rest would just like something unique and useful.

Let’s discuss what souvenirs could fall into these three categories when you travel to various countries in Europe.  I chose our three most popular destinations for this blog.

United Kingdom

  • Silly Souvenirs- Figurines of Red Telephone Booths, English Bulldog T-shirts, Snow Globes with the London Eye inside
  • Foodstuffs- Variety pack of hot teas, Marmite spread, Walker‚Äôs Crisps‚Äì these guys have unbelievable flavors of potato chips such as Roasted Chicken & Thyme, Prawn Cocktail and English Roast Beef & Yorkshire Pudding
  • Useful- Jewelry box from Harrods, Teapots (some are shaped like Red Telephone Booths and Double Decker buses!)

Italy

  • Silly Souvenirs- Leaning Tower of Pisa paperweight, Roman Gladiator Helmet keychain, Trevi Fountain Christmas ornaments
  • Foodstuffs- Wine from any given region throughout Italy, Mozzarella and/or Parmigiano cheese, coffee from Naples, various types of olive oil
  • Useful- Art prints, framed lithographs, Marocchino cups, Horn Pendant ‚Äì meant to bring the person wearing it good luck, authentic Venetian glass, etched wine carafes

France

  • Silly Souvenirs- Miniature version of the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe Magnets, ¬†Poster Art Coasters
  • Foodstuffs ‚Äì Wine from one of the many wine regions throughout France, Pralus Chocolatier Chocolates, violet jelly and/or mustard, Ladur√©e Macaroons
  • Useful- Beautiful stationery from Au Printemps, lovely patterned scarves, ¬†Savon de Marseille (Marseille Soap)

Myself, I like things that fall into any of these categories. I have received Italian olive oil, the Bulldog T-shirt (and yes, I wear it) and magnets galore.  What is your favorite souvenir from your travels?
