I have learned a few things, some the hard way, throughout the years about preparing to travel. Save yourself over $100 on your next trip with the 5 following tips.
Take a look at the airport’s website before flying
I was 19 when my sister and I decided to take a 2 day layover to explore Iceland before returning home from Europe. As the cab drove us away from the airport, panic began to set in as we watched the cityscape fade into the horizon. Where was this guy taking us?! Airport websites provide you all the vital local information you may need to know, such as the available transportation services and the fact that Reykjavik airport is 45 km from the actual city.
Read through the airline’s baggage restriction information
A couple years ago I took a trip to Florida with my boyfriend. We got hit with an oversized baggage fee of almost $100; the suitcase was a ½ in over the size limit. View your airline’s baggage regulations online to learn about prohibited items, acceptable luggage dimensions, carry-on bag restrictions and much more.
Read this before switching on a smart phone in another country
A friend of mine returned home from our recent trip to Canada to discover $100 in cell phone charges on her next bill. International Data Roaming Charges began racking up the moment the smart phone was turned on, and she did not make a single call while in Canada. Before you leave the country, call your cell phone company to see if you can purchase a short term international cell phone plan, or rent an international cell phone.
Plan for traffic
When I was in my early 20s, I took a week-long vacation to visit a good friend in Richmond, VA. I did not think to consider the morning rush hour traffic I would encounter on I 95 heading towards Washington DC. I missed my flight, an error that almost cost me my job at the time. Check the traffic report before you leave the driveway.
Book travel plans in advance
I spent a semester abroad in Spain while studying in college, and I made the very costly mistake purchasing my plane ticket at the last minute. I later found out from my classmates that I paid 2 times more than they did. My last advice to you is to book your flight reservations a few months in advance. Whether you are looking to book flights to Berlin, Germany or book flights to Barcelona, Spain, 1 800 Fly Europe will offer you the lowest rates on international flights. Save your money to purchase the really important things in life, like a pair of shoes from Italy.
Fall in London. For many the fall season is the ideal time to travel for the frugal adventurer. One of the biggest reasons would be the cost of the trip. Your biggest expense is airfare and you will quickly that costs decline this time of year. You might not notice it at first, but flight availability is much better during this slower season, so you have a much better chance of finding the exact dates you want to travel at a lower fare compared to the difficult peak season. Ok, you’ve narrowed down the dates you want to travel and you’re just about ready to purchase your tickets, now you need to think about where you want to stay. Just like airfare availability, hotels will have plenty of room’s open which in turn means lower nightly rates. If you combine these two reasons alone and you’ll notice that you’ve already saved a good amount of money by choosing a fall vacation.
If you visited London during the peak season in the past then you will be pleasantly surprised by the lack of large crowds in fall. This means you will spend less time waiting in line or in a queue as the British call it, to attend events or even just getting around the city. Less waiting and fewer crowds mean less stress; this is a vacation after all.
Fall also means that the kids are back in school, so families are less apt to be on their family vacations. This makes it the perfect time for a romantic trip with your significant other and means things are much more intimate wherever you go.
Some might argue that the downside of fall is the cooler temperatures that it brings. However as long as you are prepared when you pack for your trip this shouldn’t be too much of a downside. This doesn’t mean you’ll need your winter coat every day, but you should plan your outfits in easy to remove or add layers. This enables you to be ready for whatever the day is like as well as how quickly it can change. The key thing to remember is an umbrella. London is well known for its quick and sometimes long rain showers.
Above all enjoy yourself. Don’t over plan your days so you feel like you have to rush. Give yourself some wiggle room and allow the city to unfold naturally.
Hello, Travelers! It is a chilly, rainy day today here in Portland. I guess I’d better get used to it since summer is rapidly coming to an end. When a day like this comes, I daydream of cozying up with a good book in an old fashioned cottage in the English countryside, sitting either in a bay window or next to a roaring fire in the stone fireplace (the latter fantasy usually comes with much colder days).
Alas, I am not in my beautiful wooden cottage. That doesn’t mean I can’t cook something that makes me feel like I am there, though, right? Right! I think a delicious Cottage Pie would be fitting!
Cottage Pie
1 lb lean ground beef
1 c beef broth
1 tbsp butter, softened
1 tbsp tomato paste
4 oz shredded cheddar
3 c mashed potatoes
½ c carrots, chopped
1 small onion, diced
¼ c fresh parsley, chopped
2 tbsp all purpose flour
¼ tsp black pepper
1 tsp thyme leaves
Paprika
Salt and pepper to taste
Preheat oven to 350°
Crumble beef into a large skillet and cook over medium heat for about a minute. Add onion, carrot and cook for 5 minutes or until meat is browned and onions are translucent. Mix in flour, thyme, parsley and butter.
Combine broth and tomato paste together in a small bowl and mix well. Add to beef mixture. Reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add mixture into an 8 inch baking dish.
Sprinkle cheddar over the meat mixture and spread potatoes evenly over the top. Sprinkle with paprika, bake at 350° for 20 minutes or until potatoes are slightly browned.
For an authentic feel, serve with steamed carrots and peas.
